
The House of Lords Children and Families Act 2014 committee published its report Children and Families Act 2014: A failure of implementation in December.
The act set out to be a landmark piece of legislation with good intentions. Its impact was to have been wide ranging, giving greater protection to vulnerable children being fostered and adopted; better support for children and families going through the family courts; a new system to help children with special educational needs and disabilities; and help for parents to balance work and family life.
This could have been the case, had any real focus been placed on making the reforms a reality and without the added incessant churn within the government. Instead, we found that it was largely a missed opportunity that has ultimately failed too many people it was meant to protect.
