Bucking the trend in childhood obesity isn't easy; there's no silver bullet.
Recent research (see box) shows obesity rates in Leeds among four-and five-year-olds declined significantly since 2009, with the drop more evident in the least well-off parts of the city. The research is based on an observational study of data; it doesn't directly tell us what has caused this change.
However, we believe the Leeds commitment to a broad and holistic preventative approach, buttressed by a partnership commitment through our children and young people's plan to delivering good outcomes for children in the city, has been key.
Involving partners from a wide range of agencies makes a big difference and there is good strategic sign up to the Leeds Healthy Weight Plan. This is a plan focusing on positive actions to prevent obesity.
