Inspectors criticise SEND support in Northumberland

By Joe Lepper |

13 December 2018

Inspectors have criticised the quality of support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Northumberland, warning that too many are struggling in mainstream schools.

Cuts to children's services budgets for family support and youth work represent a "false economy", simply leading to greater pressure on safeguarding provision, Ofsted has warned.

Thousands of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are not getting the support they need despite government attempts to improve the system, Ofsted's chief inspector has warned.

Out-of-school settings will be asked to abide by a voluntary code of practice as part of government plans to improve safeguarding of children.

Reducing local levels of poverty and providing good-quality children's services are central to lowering the number of children being taken into care, a study has found.

The Department for Education has announced plans to improve children's services at a troubled council after Ofsted inspectors warned of rising caseloads for social workers have resulted in children being left unprotected.

The government is to look at incentivising schools to be more inclusive, in response to a critical report from MPs into the increasing number of children being excluded and placed in alternative provision.

A council has been praised by Ofsted for establishing resilient and sustainable services for vulnerable children despite the pressure of growing demand.

Ofsted has praised a supportive environment and high morale among children's social workers following a check on provision in Manchester.
