The education of looked-after children has been rising up the political agenda in recent months, and the new duty on local authorities to promote educational attainment will drive this forward. But so far, little progress has been made in actually improving outcomes. The grim fact still is that fewer than 10 per cent of looked-after children leave school with five or more A to C grades at GCSE.

Social care star ratings brief: Looked-after health improved

Indicators for the health of looked-after children showed that improvements were made in 2003/04. The percentage of children looked after for at least 12 months who had a check-up at the dentist or an annual health check had risen to 75.1 per cent, compared to to 71.6 per cent in 2002/03 and 68.2 per cent in 2001/02.

I was really surprised and happy when I won a prize in Mencap's national photographic competition. I took the photo while playing in the leaves with my little sister Martha and my older sister Rachael. It was taken in my back garden. I thought Martha looked really sweet and happy and like she was having lots of fun. So I ran inside to get my camera, waited for a smile and clicked.

Almost a third of young people think sexually transmitted infections can be caught from a toilet seat, a survey for sexual health charity Brook has revealed. It also found that many do not use condoms consistently or correctly.
