NYA Update: Sector support for institute for youth work

Friday, March 2, 2012

A recent consultation undertaken by the National Youth Agency (NYA), as part of its work with the NCVYS-led Catalyst consortium, has identified the youth sector would welcome more work towards developing a membership body for youth work that can provide a coherent voice for the sector and promote practice standards.

The consultation was run by the NYA between September and November 2011 and received a total of 233 responses, the majority of which were from individuals, but also included organisations and groups.

Of the total respondents, 92 per cent felt the development of a body would be a good thing, with 80 per cent identifying the primary function for it to be a voice for youth work in policy making, led by and for youth workers.

The consultation also identified that less than 40 per cent of respondents wanted it to provide a "licence to practice", although a higher proportion (49 per cent) were interested in it holding a register of youth work practitioners.

The findings are now being reviewed and stakeholder feedback will inform the development of NYA’s year-two workplan.
