Survey examines education barriers
Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Young people in care are to be quizzed about barriers to their education as part of a youth-led survey in Bradford.
The survey is to be carried out by young people in care who belong to Bradford Council's Get the Life You Want Group in a bid to identify how best to improve the education of looked-after children. Every young person in care in Bradford will be sent a questionnaire as part of the work.
Conservative councillor Colin Gill, Bradford's lead member for children's services, said: "This survey will give a really clear view of the experiences of young people in care. We want to ensure that they have the same opportunities to achieve as all other young people in the district and seeing things from their perspective will really help us to achieve this."
Elizabeth, a 16-year-old member of the Get the Life You Want Group, said: "We are doing the research to help other young people in care get their views across and have a better start in life."
The work is supported by The National Youth Agency's Young Researcher Network and the council hopes to have the initial findings ready by November.
