My Life: Alex Lamb, 18, Keighley

It was about a year into studying for my A-levels that I realised that I had no intention of pursuing a career in these subjects.
While interesting topics, I could not see myself getting involved in law or psychology. This left me at something of a dead end. I had achieved a respectable set of GCSEs from my home education and I decided that some work experience to put on my CV would serve much better than two A-levels I would never use.
My sister told me about the option of apprenticeships, and my search began. Within a month, I was sat behind the reception desk of the Connexions centre in Keighley, Yorkshire.
After being educated at home and being somewhat separated from society for a number of years, it was quite overwhelming to be mixing with so many people so often. While it wasn't an easy adjustment, it is one that I am glad to have made.
Being based in an environment so focused on providing careers advice to young people has given me the context to figure out what I want to do next in life, and provided me with all the help I could possibly need to make it happen. While I'm still not sure what my long-term future may hold, this year-long apprenticeship has certainly been an experience, and I'm sure the knowledge and skills I have picked up here can only aid me in whatever comes next.
