The 2010 Children & Young People Now Awards, held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in central London last week, was a scene of jubilation and pride for those who work with children, young people and families.
And the awards provided a timely morale boost to a sector grappling with impending cuts to services. Care leaver Kyle (Kay-Jay) Simmons wowed the 700-strong audience with the song Keep Dreaming, sung alongside Stephanie Hazel, to offer a positive message for young people, before the awards winners were unveiled by the compere for the night, TV presenter Michael Underwood.
CYP Now editor Ravi Chandiramani opened proceedings, giving way to Education Secretary Michael Gove to deliver the keynote address. "Gathered in this room are some of the most inspiring, idealistic and impressive people in the country," Gove said. "The job that I do at the heart of government is made not just easier, but possible, by the efforts that all of you and those that you work with, put in to raise attainment and aspiration and to lift the hearts of children across the country."
