Expanded role for parenting academy

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Police and council housing officers are to be offered parenting support courses as part of an expanded remit for the National Academy for Parenting Practitioners.

The academy currently offers training and courses to designated parenting support workers. However, chief executive Angela Sibson told CYP Now the academy is looking to support a wider range of public sector employees who have contact with parents on a daily basis.

"There are an enormous number of professionals out there who deal with parents every day, although it is not the main part of their role," she said.

"Parenting support courses should not just be for specialists, it should be for them as well. Very often these professionals have not had specialist training, are educated to A-level standard and do not have experience of looking at research."

The academy was set up last year with £30m from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
