I need to update my supervision policy for staff in my setting. I have never done this before, having inherited the policy. How do I start?

The Early Years Foundation Stage requires that providers put appropriate arrangements in place for the supervision of staff who have contact with children and families. Supervision should foster a culture of mutual support, teamwork and continuous improvement.

It should provide opportunities for staff to discuss any issues, particularly concerning children’s development; identify solutions; and receive coaching to improve their personal effectiveness.

Settings need a policy to set out the frequency and duration of supervision and where such sessions should take place. Good supervision helps staff manage performance and plan learning and development opportunities. It should not be an annual appraisal, but a regular means of supporting staff to provide good practice.
