Caroline Abrahams is to leave the Local Government Association (LGA) to become Children's Secretary Ed Balls' policy adviser.

The date for her move is yet to be confirmed, because the LGA is recruiting for a replacement programme director for children and young people.

But she could be working for the Secretary of State from as soon as the end of the month.

She said: "It was fantastic working at the LGA but I look forward to the challenge of working at the Department for Children, Schools and Families."

Abrahams was previously director of policy and strategy at Action for Children and chair of the End Child Poverty campaign.
