Barclays, Gatwick Airport, BT, EasyJet, the Department for Education and Poole Family Information Service have already signed up to the Family Friendly scheme, which aims to help businesses and their staff better understand the needs of families.

Family members will be asked to give feedback to organisations on the Family Friendly website, helping them to improve the services they are delivering.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Katherine Rake, Family and Parenting Institute chief executive, said: "We know that only six per cent of families think the UK is very family friendly. Many feel public services are poor and businesses are not meeting their needs. Now, more than ever, it is important that we provide locations, experiences, goods and services that families can enjoy together."

Businesses and public bodies that sign up will have to pledge to make life better for their customers and employees over the next year.
