Funding for projects encouraging and developing leadership among young people and supporting disadvantaged young people

Funding The majority of funds available for major grants are given to organisations identified by the trust, but small grants of £7,500 are also available. The beneficiaries of Rank's youth programmes receive £2m a year.

Funder The Rank Foundation charitable trust restricted to causes within the UK approved by the Charity Commission. It concentrates exclusively on: encouraging and developing leadership among young people; supporting disadvantaged young people and those frail or lonely through old age or disability; and the promotion of Christian principles through film and other media. It runs a specific youth work programme, including the Youth Workers' Apprentice Programme, which funds youth worker training.

Aim The overall aims of the Youth Workers' Apprenticeship Programme are: 1) to combine work with young people and children (primarily 10-25) as well as other members of the community with Foundation Level training and qualifications in youth, community, children's work and play leadership. 2) To focus on practical skills, experience with qualification and action in a wide range of settings within the community. 3) For the trainee to gain relevant national governing body awards and qualifications. 4) To focus on transferable skills for the whole individual, such as the ability to reflect in and on practice and to be aware of the impact of their actions. This is known as ‘Reflective Practice'.

Who can apply? The youth work programme looks for work that is based in relationship; and that seeks to develop leadership, service and community. It looks for projects that engage with young people in open, thoughtful and exciting ways that foster their all-round development, or deepen and extend the abilities of those who work with young people. In considering unsolicited appeals for small grants, The Rank Foundation will tend towards projects where there are relatively small, attainable targets and they place great importance on clear evidence of local support. The directors also take into account whether it is likely that any grant that they make will be put to immediate use.
