Funding of up to 250,000 for projects helping to alleviate "poverty and misery"

Funding Grants of between £10,000 and £250,000 are available, which may take between three to six months to be awarded. Funds of up to £5,000 are also available for smaller charities. The trust will be wound down over the next five to 10 years, so it will be looking to award a number of more substantial grants to well-managed projects that will have a long lasting impact.

Funder J. Paul Getty Sr was one of the world's first billionaires, making his money in the oil industry. When he died he left most of his cash to the Getty Trust in the US. This is a much more modest, but still substantial, trust created by his son.

Aim The trust looks to alleviate "poverty and misery" and support unpopular causes, which can include young offenders, and ethnic minorities.

Who can apply? Local charitable organisations in the UK. Special priority tends to go to those organisations in disadvantaged areas outside the south east of England.
