Working with Young Men: Activities for Exploring Personal, Social and Emotional Issues

The second edition of this book explores how practitioners can prepare for almost every situation associated with young men. Author and Youth Work Now contributor Vanessa Rogers offers assistance on planning sessions, builds in activities to explore specific topics, then reminds the practitioner throughout to think about outcomes and the next steps for young men.

The activities are diverse and take into account the differences in how young men learn. Long gone are the days of one-size-fits-all activities. Some exercises may be familiar to those in youth work, but what's different with Rogers' approach is that she presents the exercises from the teacher/pupil perspective, useful for practitioners who perhaps need more support with delivery.

Most powerful is the fact that there are activities that take the young men on a journey. From warm-ups that build confidence to more in-depth exercises, Rogers' approach is simple, creative and informative. While it acknowledges that addressing vulnerable young people's needs is difficult, more methodology attached to engaging these hard-to-reach individuals would have made this extremely useful resource even better.
