Autism: A Parent's Guide

When reading this book, I learned a lot more than I expected to about autism, the impact it can have upon a family, and some tried and tested methods that can be used to navigate through daily life when you have children with autism.

In my role as the administrator for autism charity TreeHouse's Parent Participation Project, which works with parents of children with various disabilities including autism, I found this book provided invaluable guidance that I would recommend for any parent whose child has recently been diagnosed with autism.

At TreeHouse we believe that parents are the experts when it comes to their children, so involving them is a key part of our work. That is why it's so valuable to have resources like this to hand, which are based on expert first-hand experience. In addition, the Parent Participation Project aims to empower parents to feel confident enough in their own experiences not only to improve the lives of children with disabilities, but to work with other parents on similar journeys.

The author's history as a writer of children's books shines through in this clear, concise and easy-to-read guide. Hawkes' ability to use her professional skills to produce such a resource is not only extremely useful for parents but also teachers, health professionals and any individual who has contact with children and young people with autism.

This book is a good example of how parents can use their experiences and skills to both support other parents and raise awareness about the needs of children with disabilities.
