ASYLUM SEEKERS: Youth forum is set to question MPs

Tuesday, May 27, 2003

MPs will be questioned about asylum issues by young people at the next British Youth Council parliamentary youth forum on 24 June in Westminster.

Among those invited to attend are Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, and Labour backbencher Karen Buck.

The announcement follows the release of the council's report into March's forum, when 35 young people from youth councils quizzed MPs on entitlement cards, which would effectively function as identity cards.

Two-thirds of young people surveyed by the council were in favour of non-compulsory entitlement cards, while 28 per cent were unsure. The proposal for entitlement cards is to be considered by Tony Blair's Cabinet in July.

Clare Fowler, council projects manager at the youth council, said: "We've worked with student refugee charity, Star, to bring young people, including refugees and asylum seekers, to Parliament to question and present to MPs."
