SEXUAL EXPLOITATION: Be aware of early signs of abuse

Tuesday, April 29, 2003

Schools and agencies must work together to prevent young people being drawn into prostitution and violent abuse, says the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a social research and development charity.

After completing a study of 13 to 18-year-olds, the foundation has called for better understanding of early warning signs from teenagers who are being groomed by men for sexual exploitation.

Someone Taking a Part of You: A Study of Young Women and Sexual Exploitation was conducted in partnership with Middlesex University and the NSPCC.

It involved 55 teenagers who were either at risk or already selling sex.
