RECREATION: Derbyshire creates trials biking park

Wednesday, February 26, 2003

Direct involvement by young bikers has helped to create a 16,000 trials biking park in the Sawley area of Derbyshire.

Regeneration charity Ground-work Erewash Valley built the park after the Stunt Jumpers trials bike group approached Erewash Borough Council with the request.

Trials biking involves riders on specialised motorbikes negotiating obstacles over varied terrain, while keeping their feet off the ground.

Funding for the project came from the East Midlands Development Agency, which gave 15,000, and 1,000 came from the Co-operative Group.

The park was constructed to the young people's specifications and included 10 tonnes of boulders, large concrete blocks, steps, timber posts, balance beams and two picnic tables.

Tom Pettit, Groundwork Erewash Valley landscape architect, said: "I don't know of any similar facility in this area and I believe this has set the standard for any future projects."
