BACK PAGE: And this is what I do.Julian Winter, community manager,Sheffield Wednesday football club

Wednesday, January 22, 2003

What do you do? I manage the community activities of the football club, including Football in the Community, Study Support & Learning Centre, Owls Against Racism Steering Group, Young Owls (Junior Club) and an in-development Disabled Supporters Group.

What's a typical day? I deal with incoming correspondence, meet staff, partner organisations, sponsors, community groups, schools and potential partners. Report writing, project planning, financial planning, marketing, managing staff, business planning and so on.

Who else is in your meetings? Local, regional and national agencies, including Sheffield City Council, primary care trusts, youth offending teams, area panels, regeneration agencies, the national Football in the Community scheme, the FA, the county FA, South Yorkshire Sports Partnership, The Learning and Skills Council, DfES, Sheffield Race Equality Council, local councillors, private companies, junior football clubs, Sheffield Out of School Network and kids clubs.

What got you the job? Experience of working in football in a variety of roles, with key partners. Experience of developing projects that use football as a vehicle for change, through education, health, social inclusion and community cohesion.

Biggest thrill? Starting a project with partners and seeing it evolve over time, to it actually being delivered and making a difference. Seeing smiles on faces.

Biggest headache? Keeping all the balls in the air, to use a football analogy. We are applying for charitable status for our community programme, and this is fairly complex in terms of putting all the pieces of the jigsaw together in the right place and keeping everyone happy.
