HEALTH: Fitness centres will help fight the flab

| 22 January 2003

Liverpudlians aged eight to 16 will be able to sample their own health and fitness centres in a scheme to be launched at the end of February.

Funded by Liverpool City Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to the tune of 54,000, two purpose-built gyms are part of the council's bid to fight obesity among the young.

Councillor Warren Bradley said: "The gyms are part of our initiative to get kids healthy and off the streets, away from couches and computer terminals, and lower crime rates.

"We want to show them there's something else to do, and encourage gym membership."
