PROTECTION: NCH sets out plan to protect young

| 22 January 2003

Children's charity NCH has published a recommendation on how to improve the protection of young people, in anticipation of the findings by the Laming Inquiry into the death of child abuse victim Victoria Climbie.

NCH has set out a 10-point plan. The recommendations have been drawn up before the publication of a report by Lord Laming, who is expected by February to have completed an inquiry into why the death of eight-year-old Climbie in London was not prevented by social care safeguards.

As well as educating parents and empowering local communities to help protect children and teenagers, the report calls for the restoration of professional status for child protection workers. On top of worker housing schemes, the charity suggests the Government should fund recruitment campaigns of the same quality as those used to attract other key public sector workers.
