Fifth of childcarers are not qualified
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
One in five people working in childcare centres in Scotland do not have a childcare qualification, Scottish Government figures show.
The figure of four-fifths of childcare workers in centres having at least one childcare qualification has not changed since 2005, the statistics reveal. The statistics also show two-thirds of active childminders do not have a childcare qualification.
A spokesman for the Scottish Pre-School and Play Association expressed surprise, saying anecdotal evidence showed more childcare workers are working towards qualifications.
"The aim is by 2011 centre managers and leaders will have or be working towards a graduate level qualification," he said.
