Health inequalities are still rampant

Government initiatives to tackle health inequalities have had little impact and more needs to be done to reduce infant mortality rates for those from poorer backgrounds, according the NHS Confederation.
Researchers found children from poor backgrounds are one-and-a-half times as likely to die during infancy as children from better off families. There has been no change in the inequalities levels of infant mortality for 2002/04 compared to 2001/03.
The report In Sickness and in Health, says a broad range of action is needed to tackle the causes of inequality as well as the NHS taking action to improve access to services for people from poorer backgrounds.
