Education: Inclusion scheme improves grades
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Social inclusion programme Positive Futures has developed a successful scheme in Coventry targeting pupils at risk of dropping out of school.
In the first year, 40 young people who were misbehaving took part in a programme of activities to re-engage them in school. Ten of the young people most at risk of being excluded were then referred onto educational support sessions. All of them completed their GCSEs and four have gone on to further education.
Nicola Capok, project co- ordinator for Positive Futures Coventry, said: "Building a relationship with the young people based on trust and respect is the way forward."
The programme is based at the Sidney Stringer Community Technology College.
