Childcare & Early Years: Shift towards full daycare provision

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Part-time daycare providers are in steep decline as children increasingly attend full daycare services, a review of childcare services has found.

The 2006 Childcare and Early Years Providers Survey review of sessional daycare found the number of services has plummeted in the past five years, down from 14,000 providers in 2001 to 9,681 in 2006. BMRB Social Research, which carried out the review, put the fall down to "a continued shift towards full daycare provision".

Kate Goddard, policy and research officer at the Daycare Trust, said the shift from sessional to full daycare provision may be due to parental preferences, particular government initiatives and financial pressures.
