Universities must tighten up child protection

The government has called on universities to tighten up their child protection procedures.
Guidance released yesterday says higher education institutions should develop written policies on safeguarding children and establish clear lines of responsibility for child protection.
The guidance aims to plug the gap in child protection legislation affecting universities in England.
It calls on universities to build links with local safeguarding children boards and to improve their checks on staff and students.
The Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills guidance will be updated once the Independent Safeguarding Authority starts work next year.
