An apprenticeship scheme that helps young people get into the music industry is to be expanded after a successful pilot.

Music company SonyBMG worked with communications group Livity on the Music 4 Good project. This gave young people the chance to work at Sony labels.

Following the pilot Sony has agreed to continue the scheme. And The Brit Trust, the charitable arm of industry body BPI, has also come on board.

Music 4 Good funds the wages of young people on internships at record labels, and pays for them to take an Open College Network course.

Round two of the scheme will involve 12 young people, who will get a chance to work on Sony labels, and for independent labels using in the BPI funding.

Ged Doherty, chief executive officer of SonyBMG, said: “This initiative is the perfect example of how music can be harnassed to positive effect.

“With the BRIT Trust funding in place the industry can offer more work placements in a wider range of companies – from the majors right through to the smallest independents.”
