Think tank recommends youth rights hotline
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Children and young people should be able to report adults who infringe their right play outside by ringing a hotline, according to a report from think tank Demos.
The report, commissioned by Play England, says the hotline could become a major way of protecting young people’s right to be in public spaces.
The Seen and Heard report also proposes a 20mph speed limit in all residential streets and making space suitable for play part of all new street design.
The authors recommend encouraging interdisciplinary work experience, for example swaps across transport and children’s services, to encourage professionals to foster deeper understanding of the diverse professions involved.
Adrian Voce, director of Play England, said the proposals demanded a “positive, robust and urgent response from all levels of government and from society at large”.
