Call for admissions code to be simplified

The school admissions code should be made simpler to make it easier for hard-to-reach parents to understand, a conference has heard.
Speaking at a Westminster Education Forum seminar on implementing the school admissions code, David Butler, chief executive of the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations, called for a simple guide of the admissions code to be produced for parents. Butler said this was vital “if we are to succeed in reaching the hard to reach”.
Julian Butcher, deputy director of the fair access division at the Department for Children, Schools and Families, admitted that the government had “fallen short” in terms of providing adequate guidance for parents.
But he said that 122 local authorities had choice advisors in place at the end of October who were, “helping families navigate the system and providing good quality information, and also simply ensuring that parents fill in their applications and get them in on time.”
