EDUCATION NEWS: Full-service schools - Call for all schools to extend facilities

Tuesday, February 3, 2004

The leader of a Government taskforce has proposed health and social services should be located on every school site.

Derek Collins, project executive of the education, social care and health division of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's strategic partnering taskforce, said schools were a natural focal point for a range of services.

Plans for extended schools are under way and the DfES has set aside 52.2m to fund 240 full-service schools by 2006.

Collins believes every school should be able to develop health and social services on site. "It ceases to be a school and becomes a child's facility," he said.

The taskforce will publish its report in March.
