The committee aims to incorporate the interests of social workers into mental health practice. It will discuss and debate ways of improving partnerships between social workers and other mental health professionals to facilitate the contribution of social workers to the sector.
It is hoped the committee will also influence and inform national agendas and policies concerning mental health.
Ruth Cartwright, professional officer for BASW England, said she expected the new committee to be in operation shortly.
She said: "We want to be a voice for social workers but also for service users and carers."
