For the last school year there were a record 1.3mn referrals, marking a 71% increase since 2018/19 when 759,772 were made, according to analysis of latest NHS figures by Young Minds.

In separate research, the youth mental health charity has also found widespread concern among teachers around pupils’ emotional wellbeing and access to support.

Just under half of teachers warn that the child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) that they refer young people to “are not fit for purpose".
