To mark the 30th anniversary of the Children Act 1989 receiving Royal Assent, the latest edition of CYP Now looks at how this seminal piece of legislation left a lasting legacy for the way practitioners help and protect vulnerable children.

Six leading experts from across the sector reflect on the impact the legislation has had and identify emerging threats to its core principles.

The 12-page special report looks at the latest research, policy and practice developments in character education. Practice examples include the work of Sea Cadets in deprived inner-city areas; Commando Joe's programme in schools and childcare settings; the volunteering scheme run by Swavesey Village College; and how the Challenge is working with young people at risk of becoming Neet. 

Former DCS Colin Green assesses the merits of recommendations from a review of Ofsted's children's services framework which calls for a greater focus on practice in inspections.
