Goal: To produce a short film, and use the experience to learn about film production
Funding: Braunstone LifeLong Learning is funded by Leicester Council, but the 4,000 for the filming came from the BCA Oak Fund, a local fund that helps youth work projects
When development youth workers Yatish Chavda and David Maggs started at Braunstone LifeLong Learning in September 2003, they knew they wanted to run a creative project, but they weren't sure what. So they turned to the young people they worked with for advice. "We were asking them what their favourite films were, whether they liked comedy or horror," says Chavda. "After a few sessions, we had a base of young people who wanted to make a film."
Maggs and Chavda decided to hand everything over to the young people, allowing them to decide the content, write the script and the screenplay, and act in the finished production. Sessions were held for two hours on a Friday evening and initially 11 young people were involved, although Chavda says the final group that worked on the film consisted of between two and four young people, including Matt Smith (pictured above, left), Sarah Booth and Andrew Smith.
The group decided to set the production in their local community of Braunstone and to call it Random Day. "It is a short film based on a group of young people and what they do," says Chavda.
As well as being a youth worker, Chavda is also a part-time lecturer in photography, so he was able to pass on some of his knowledge about angles and lighting. Once the screenplay was complete, the group was able to get 4,000 from the BCA Oak Fund to employ a company called Soft-Touch Project to make the film.
The finished product, which is 10-minutes long, will be given out to the young people who worked on the project and to other youth groups.
Chavda hopes to get it shown on TV. "It's only short," he says. "It could be shown."
