Resources: Funding focus - 4front Awards

By , Wednesday 13 July 2005

What's it all about? This set of awards funds young people who have great ideas for improving the lives of other young people in their community.

The scheme is backed by the Camelot Foundation, the independent grant-making trust funded by lottery operator the Camelot Group. It has been developed by Camelot in partnership with a group of young people.

Who does it fund? Anyone aged 11 to 25 can apply for one of the awards as an individual or as small groups. Under-16s should generally be part of a small group and have an organisation to back them.

What will it fund? The fund is designed to turn good ideas to benefit the community into reality. This year the young award-makers have decided that applications for the 2005 awards should be on one of the following themes: improving my community, health and wellbeing, standing up for my rights or arts and music. Past winners include a group of 13- and 15-year-olds in south London who hosted a series of talent shows for young people, a theatre project for young asylum seekers, young people with physical disabilities who compiled a guide to disabled-friendly facilities in their town and a school radio project. The award should be able to cover the whole project rather than just be part of a wider fundraising process.

How much is available? There are eight awards of 3,000 each.

Application process: The fund has dispensed with the usual process of form filling and instead applicants must send in a five-minute video explaining their idea and demonstrating why it deserves an award. Video applications will be judged by a panel of young people who will be looking to see if they meet the award's key criteria, which include whether the idea is achievable and if it will have a long-term impact. The closing date for applications is 19 September and successful applicants will be announced at an awards ceremony in October at the Fabric nightclub in London.
