Resources: Funding Focus - Transforming Lives

By , Wednesday 12 July 2006

What's it all about? This programme from the Camelot Foundation seeks to develop new approaches and creative ideas for reconnecting marginalised young people into the mainstream of UK life. There are four rounds each year and the theme for autumn 2006 is tackling negative attitudes, both towards young people and by them.

What will it fund? In particular, creative and risk-taking projects that challenge the kind of hurtful comments and verbal and physical abuse that gets directed towards disabled young people and projects that deal with the stigma of mental health. Also targeted for support are young people-led projects that allow marginalised groups, including young exiles and young parents, to express themselves. This includes groups that influence and challenge some of negative attitudes of other young people and some of the negative publicity they routinely receive themselves. Funding can be for project costs including salaries and management costs and evaluation and dissemination activity. It won't cover capital projects, academic research not linked to a development project or well-established or routine approaches.

Who can apply? Registered charities, or consortia with a charity in the lead, from anywhere in the UK working with young people aged 11 to 25.

How much is available? The trustees say they expect to make three or four grants of between 50,000 and 100,000. They also emphasise that applicants should cost their projects realistically and that asking for less will not increase chances of success if the budget is insufficient.

Application procedure: Stage 1 application forms are available on the web site www.camelotfoundation.org.uk or by calling 020 7828 6085. The deadline is 8 September 2006. Applications must show understanding of the needs of the priority groups and be backed up with evidence from research, statistics or consultations. Selected groups will be asked for further information and will be visited by foundation staff prior to grant decisions being made before the end of the year.
