Participation: Internet can spark interest in politics

By , Wednesday 30 March 2005

Young people are one of the groups considered most likely to benefit from e-democracy initiatives, according to a study released last week.

Research carried out by Mori for the Local e-Democracy National Project found that seven out of 10 local authorities felt that young people were a priority for engagement through new technology. The study also highlighted particular examples of work among young people, such as a case study of the London Borough of Camden's interactive web site for young people.

Angelo Evangelou, events co-ordinator at the Hansard Society, said many young people had an affinity with the internet. "We've been piloting online surgeries, in which young people can question elected representatives, and these have proved very successful," he said.
