Goals: To build young men's self-awareness and confidence so they can make informed decisions about their personal and sexual lives
Funding: It was set up with a three-year grant from the Big Lottery Fund and has secured money from the Community Fund for another two years
Aw'right is a common greeting among young men in Scotland, and fpa has used this as the basis for a sexual health and relationships programme for socially excluded young men.
Set up in 2003 with the help of four local health boards, fpa runs the project for groups including The Prince's Trust, drug rehabilitation centres, youth clubs and education centres.
Young men, mostly aged 15 to 20, attend the programme, which runs in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire.
Ongoing support is also provided through its advisory group and local workers at each organisation are trained by fpa to deliver the project to keep it going once the funding has ended.
The agenda for the programme, which lasts for eight weeks, is set by the young men themselves. The most popular topics include masturbation, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, fatherhood and condom use.
Project officer Andy Reid said: "I'm very excited by the amount of positive feedback about what the young men have learned during the sessions. I'm optimistic that we can build on the course."
Activities in the weekly sessions include quizzes, games and discussion around specific scenarios relating to sexual health. Focus groups keep in touch with the young men for three months after they take part to establish the project's long-term benefits.
Comments from the young men include: "It's been great taking part because it broke through inhibitions I've had about this stuff." And comments from organisations that have run the project include: "It made me realise the lack of knowledge of some of the young people."
