Head teachers decide whether to close a school because of snow. They are meant to assess such things as the risk of injuries, whether enough staff will turn up to supervise the children, the temperature in the classrooms and the availability of water and working toilets. Do young people think that heads are too cautious? Or not cautious enough?
Snowballing landed some young people in serious trouble. Amy Hodges, 13, from Kent, accidentally broke the rear window of a police car with a snowball. She spent four hours in a cell, had her fingerprints taken, gave a DNA sample, and was given a formal reprimand when officers decided not to proceed with a charge of criminal damage. Do young people think this is a reasonable way to be treated?
Eight young people from County Durham were excluded from school after disobeying rules not to throw snowballs. The mother of one of them said: "Kids don't see snow very often and they are bound to be a bit hyper ... I think it's ridiculous." Do young people agree?
A 13-year-old in Suffolk was attacked by a passing motorist when a snowball hit the man's car. The driver struck the young man across the back of the head, kneed him in the face and threatened to break his neck. Talk about the need to be aware of how stressed and irrational adults get.
Should young people make allowances for adults who get a bit hyper?
A 10-year-old boy in Aberdeenshire was crushed to death by a giant snowball. He was playing with a friend when the snowball, reported to weigh a quarter of a tonne, rolled down a hill and hit him.
Observers said it was a freak accident. A spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said he had never heard of anything like it happening before. Ask young people whether the tragedy will affect their attitude to playing in the snow.
