Mentoring: Black boys take part in speed mentoring

By , Wednesday 09 March 2005

A project based on the concept of speed dating has helped match underachieving Black teenage boys with male professionals who will provide them with one-to-one mentoring and act as positive role models.

The Enfield-based Champion's Forum project was set up by Rena Abraham, a human resources professional at the London Fire Brigade, and involved 15 teenagers and 15 professionals from various occupations.

"The boys met the Criminal Records Bureau-checked professionals for four minutes each," said Abraham. "The young people tick boxes and at the end any matches are paired up. They will meet on a mutual ongoing basis."

A similar event for girls is on the cards, added Abraham.
