Around 20,000 students will be taking the first Diploma in September this year, according to the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Children’s secretary Ed Balls said he wanted the number of pupils taking the new qualification to “evolve naturally, driven by growing excitement about what is on offer and by careful planning of study at local levels”.
