Victim's widow sets up body to cut drink-related violence
By Charlotte Goddard Tuesday, 09 February 2010
Helen Newlove, whose husband was killed by three drunken teenagers two years ago, has set up an organisation aiming to reduce drink-related violence and criminal behaviour.
The National Licensed Trade Association (NLTA) brings together organisations including Alcohol Concern, the ambulance service, NHS, police and the drinks industry.
The NLTA is launching a training scheme for those who work in the licensed trades to recognise and handle alcohol excess before it gets out of hand.
Newlove has previously set up Newlove FM, a Warrington-based community radio station, and campaigned for more youth opportunities and training with Through Unity, a coalition of bereaved families.
Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "If we are to reduce the harms excessive drinking cause, we must radically alter the way alcohol is being sold – if given a chance, this new initiative will undoubtedly save lives."
