Ofsted to reduce early years staff

Tuesday, 02 February 2010

A drop in the number of registered childminders has forced Ofsted to make 10 per cent of early years inspectors redundant.

According to Unison, which has been in discussions with Ofsted, the inspectorate has a surplus of early years inspectors, a likely result of a drop in childcare providers.

Around 55 inspectors could be affected. Ofsted is now inviting applications for voluntary redundancy.

"The morale and atmosphere in Ofsted is so difficult that large numbers of people want out, so we're accepting the process," said Unison officer Jon Richards.
