First care leavers video to focus on housing

By Charlotte Goddard Friday, 23 October 2009

The first in a series of videos released by CYP Now to mark National Care Leavers Week 2009 focuses on housing issues facing care leavers.

The video, available at www.lifeaftercare.tv, includes an interview with Janet Anderson, senior commissioning and partnership manager at Camden's Children, Schools and families department. Anderson describes the London borough's pathway housing scheme which supports 16- to 21-year-old care leavers in the transition to their own accomodation.

Anderson says the service is a "seamless process, so there is not a sudden cut off at 18; they can stay within the service and have some level of practice for independence before they move into their own accomodation."

The video also features interviews with three care leavers talking about their experiences with housing. Chareen, 18, says she wants to go to university but is finding it difficult to arrange housing between term times. "I'll have to find my own accommodation when I come back in the holidays," she says, expressing worries about the kind of accommodation she might end up in.

CYP Now is releasing a new video every day during National Care Leavers Week. Tomorrow's video is themed around mental health.
