Speech and language body lacks education expertise
By Ross Watson Thursday, 01 October 2009
The public body charged with spearheading government reforms to improve services for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) has been accused of lacking education expertise.
The Communication Council was formed as part of the £52m Better Communication action plan, published last December.
"The whole area of work is dominated by health," Communication Trust director Anita Kerwin-Nye, who represents expert and voluntary organisations on the council told CYP Now. "Without representation from education there is a risk SLCN will continue to be marginalised in schools."
The government is also yet to appoint a communications champion to head up the council, a key pledge in the action plan that was informed by John Bercow's 2008 review of SLCN in England.
