Funding for Friday and Saturday night youth activities
By Charlotte Goddard Monday, 10 November 2008
Local authorities are to receive funding to provide youth activities on Friday and Saturday nights.
Seventy seven councils, including the 10 areas that are part of the Tackling Knives Action Programme, will receive £25,000 each to provide activities that will be decided by young people.
Children's minister Beverley Hughes said: "We know that Friday and Saturday nights are a hotspot time for antisocial behaviour, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
"That's why we are investing additional funds to ensure young people have access to good quality positive activities at the times they want and need them."
Jeremy Glover, chief executive of Bolton Lads and Girls Club, said: "This is great news - youth centres will be open when young people want them to be open.
"Bolton Lads & Girls Club has opened its doors every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the past 10 years."
