Scotland to tackle alcohol misuse

Friday, 29 August 2008

Scotland's public health minister is urging children's professionals to join a debate on tackling alcohol misuse.

The Scottish Government is running a consultation on changing Scotland’s relationship with alcohol, which closes in two weeks time.

Proposals include raising the off-sales alcohol purchase age to 21 and a social responsibility fee for some retailers.

This would be combined with better enforcement and education about alcohol, the Scottish Government has said.

Shona Robinson, minister for public health, said: “This government has taken the bull by the horns and put forward radical measures to rebalance Scotland’s relationship with alcohol, because we don’t want to see future generations suffer because of the way we’re drinking now.”

The consultation closes on 9 September.
