Youth crime: Call to open youth clubs on Fridays

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

The Home Office's crime and communities adviser has called for youth clubs in the 50 most deprived wards in England and Wales to be open on Friday nights.

The proposal was one of Louise Casey's 32 recommendations to government about ways of tackling criminal behaviour in her report Engaging Communities in Fighting Crime.

Staff at one unnamed youth club told her they had moved activities to Wednesday because "young people like to go drinking on Fridays".

Casey, formerly the head of Tony Blair's antisocial behaviour unit, produced the report after being commissioned by Gordon Brown to review how the public could help to reduce criminal behaviour.
