Teachers to discuss their mental health
Wednesday, 25 June 2008
Teachers suffering from mental health problems are being encouraged to discuss them with colleagues by the government.
The guidance, Common Mental Health Problems: Supporting School Staff by Taking Positive Action, says that talking to someone, such as a department head, is the first step to acknowledging there is a problem.
It says: "There is very strong evidence that when mental health problems occur, early intervention works. This means getting support or help as soon as you think you might be experiencing a problem."
According to the guidance, school governing bodies should put policies in place that recognise mental health as an issue and review them regularly. Governing bodies should also understand the responsibilities placed on them by the Disability Discrimination Act.
It adds that employers should create an environment where staff feel comfortable asking for help and interventions should be put in place, such as short-term rehabilitation and return-to-work plans.
